Welcome to Bünn Café
Bünn Café was born from a deep passion for coffee and culture. Yemen is known as the birthplace of coffee, and our goal is to share its rich tradition with coffee lovers everywhere. From carefully sourced beans to expertly crafted drinks, every cup tells a story of heritage and craftsmanship.

The Origins of Coffee
The story of coffee begins in Ethiopia, where legend tells of a goat herder named Kaldi who noticed his goats becoming unusually energetic after eating red berries from a certain tree. Curious, Kaldi took the berries to a local monk, who brewed them into a drink that helped him stay awake during prayers.
While coffee was discovered in Ethiopia, it was in Yemen that it was first cultivated, brewed, and traded. By the 15th century, Yemeni Sufi monks had begun growing coffee on mountain terraces, refining it into the rich, complex beverage we know today. This ancient tradition is what inspires Bünn Café, where every cup connects you to the roots of coffee culture.

YEMEN: The First to Cultivate Coffee
Yemen was the first country to farm coffee deliberately. High-altitude terraced farms, rich volcanic soil, and a dry climate made it ideal for coffee cultivation. Yemeni farmers used traditional, chemical-free methods, some of which are still in use today.
The name "Bünn" comes from the Arabic word for coffee beans (بُنّ), honoring the deep connection between Yemen and coffee’s origins. At Bünn Café, we celebrate this legacy by ensuring that every cup reflects the centuries-old journey of coffee from Yemen to the world.

Mokha: The First Coffee Trade Center
The port of Mokha (Al-Makha) was the world’s first hub for coffee exports. By the 16th century, Yemeni merchants were shipping coffee to the Middle East, Persia, North Africa, and Europe. This is why the word "Mocha" became linked with high-quality coffee.
Yemen’s coffee monopoly lasted for over 200years, with traders ensuring that no fertile beans left the country. But by the 1600s, Dutch and Indian traders smuggled coffee plants out of Yemen, leading to coffee cultivation in India, Java (Indonesia), and eventually the Americas.
Though coffee is now grown worldwide, its soul remains in Yemen. Bünn Café pays tribute to this legacy, bringing the spirit of Yemen’s coffee culture to your cup.

The Unique Taste of Yemeni Coffee
What makes Yemeni coffee special? Unlike mass-produced coffee, it is still grown using ancient, natural methods:
Terraced Farming: Coffee plants are grown on stone terraces, relying on rainwater and underground cisterns.
Natural Sun-Drying: Instead of washing the beans, Yemeni farmers dry the whole coffee cherry under the sun before removing the husk. This method, called "natural processing," gives Yemeni coffee its rich, fruity, and complex flavor.
Small-Scale Harvesting: Every coffee plant is hand-picked, preserving a farming tradition that has existed for centuries.
At Bünn Café, we embrace this spirit of authenticity. Our coffee is crafted with care, bringing you the same depth of flavor that has been cherished for generations.
